SEOUL, Aug 8 (Reuters) - The leaders of the divided Koreas will hold a summit from Aug. 28-30 in the North Korean capital Pyongyang, the two countries said on Wednesday.
It will be only the second summit between the two, which are still technically at war.
Here are some milestones in relations:
.. 1945 - Korea, a Japanese colony since 1910, is divided into two at the 38th parallel following Japan's defeat in World War Two. The North falls under the Soviet Union's influence while the South comes under that of the United States.
1948 - U.S.-backed Republic of Korea and Soviet-backed Democratic People's Republic of Korea formed.
.. June 25, 1950: North Korean troops invade the South to start the Korean War.
.. July, 27 1953: Korean War Armistice Agreement is signed creating a 4 km (2.5 mile) wide Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) buffer zone that divides the peninsula. Two Koreas remain technically at war because no peace treaty is signed.
.. July 4, 1972: North and South Korea reach an agreement calling for peaceful reunification.
.. October 1983: More than 20 people, including four South Korean ministers visiting Myanmar killed when North Korean agents said to have direct links to current leader Kim Jong-il blew up a major landmark.
.. November 1987: North Korea bombs a South Korean civilian airliner, killing 115 people, leading the U.S. to place it on its list of countries supporting terrorism.
.. 1990: South Korea establishes ties with the Soviet Union, then the North's biggest benefactor, in a major diplomatic coup.
.. April, 1996: North renounces the armistice and sends troops into the DMZ. In September, a North Korean submarine runs aground and is abandoned off the South Korean coast.
.. June 15, 2000: South Korean President Kim Dae-jung and North Korean leader Kim Jong-il hold an unprecedented and unrepeated summit that led to a warming of ties and increased exchanges between the two countries.
