BATU PAHAT: Malaysian roads are like warzones, with over 6,000 deaths and losses of between RM5.6bil and RM5.9bil incurred from road accidents yearly.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said although Malaysian roads were in good condition, the number of deaths, which also represents some 500 deaths per month, was more than that recorded by the United States in its four years in Iraq.
About 4,000 American lives have been lost since the United States invaded Iraq.
A total of 6,287 deaths were recorded from 341,252 accidents in Malaysia last year, Dr Chua told pressmen after launching the Batu Pahat UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd 3S branch here on Sunday.
He said among the main causes of road accidents were tailgating, speeding, overtaking recklessly and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
If these things could be avoided, the death toll on our roads could be reduced by at least 65%, he added.
