MUAR: The state government has issued evacuation alerts to all villagers living along Sungai Muar between Bukit Kepong and Panchor after the river water rose above the danger mark on Sunday.

State-secretary Datuk Latiff Yusof also ordered district officer Abdul Rahman Jaafar to rush out emergency supplies to several penghulu (village head) complexes before floods hit the areas.

He said the water level in Sungai Muar behind the Bukit Kepong police museum had reached 3.12m, above the danger level of 2.74m, and feared it could rise higher.

"Although there is no heavy rain here it is raining heavily in Segamat and we fear the water from there will flow to Bukit Kepong.

"We have to be prepared for the worst and I want all villagers along the river to be on the alert," he said during a visit to Bukit Kepong, Lenga, Gombang and Liang Batu on Sunday.

Latiff said the water level in the river in Segamat, recorded at 9.2m at 9am Sunday, was below the danger level of 9.3m and hoped it would continue to recede.

On the drowning of Irwan Nazam, 13, in Sungai Chodan, Segamat, Abdul Latiff said a search and rescue team had managed to locate the boy?s body at about 7am.

He said villagers, especially parents, should prevent their children from going near flooded rivers as the force of fast flowing water could sweep them away.

"I also urge motorists and motorcyclists not to challenge the flood by driving through a flooded road to avoid being washed away by the strong current," he said.
