JAKARTA - PORT authorities in Indonesia's second city of Surabaya scrambled on Tuesday to prevent fuel leaking from a tanker that capsized there, the port master said.
'The Karisma Selatan, a tanker, overturned just after it had finished loading fuel at around 1.30am this morning,' Tanjung Perak port master Rocky Ahmad Suherman told reporters.
The tanker had a capacity of 500,000 litres but it was unclear how full it was when it overturned, and no fuel had so far spilled, he said.
'The fuel remains in the tank and we have taken all precautions to prevent an oil spill from happening, including by deploying oil booms around the overturned tanker,' he said.
Images of the tanker showed the base of the boat still floating slightly above water.
Mr Suherman declined to comment on the cause of the incident and said an investigation was underway.
Port authorities and shipping experts were looking at ways to safely get the boat upright again.
The tanker's captain and 10 crew were unharmed and the captain was being questioned, he added.
