TOKYO - JAPANESE prosecutors said on Tuesday they had indicted the defence ministry's former top bureaucrat over a gifts-for-contracts scandal.
Takemasa Moriya, the former vice defence minister, and contractor Motonobu Miyazaki were both rearrested and indicted over bribery allegations related to the procurement of defence equipment, prosecutors said in a statement.
'Today the prosecutor's office indicated Takemasa Moriya for accepting bribery,' the statement said.
Before he and his wife were arrested last month, Moriya admitted the couple accepted fine dining, gifts and hundreds of golf trips paid for by the defence contractor.
But he denied offering any favours in return. Prosecutors said Moriya, conspiring with his wife, accepted bribes of 3.89 million yen (S$51,000) in the form of entertainment including golf trips.
Moriya, 63, who retired in August, has said that two of Japan?s former defence chiefs - Mr Fumio Kyuma and current Finance Minister Fukushiro Nukaga - also dined with a contractor from Yamada Corp.
Mr Nukaga has denied any wrongdoing but admitted playing golf with the contractor. Mr Miyazaki is a former executive of Yamada Corp. -- AFP
