SEOUL - SOUTH Korea's cabinet on Wednesday approved a bill setting up a fraud inquiry into president-elect Lee Myung Bak, a government spokesman said.

The bill on appointing a special prosecutor was passed by the cabinet, the spokesman told reporters.

Incumbent President Roh Moo Hyun will not veto the bill despite opposition requests to do so, a presidential spokesman said on Monday.

Mr Roh will name an independent counsel early next month following the recommendation of the head of the Supreme Court.

The prosecutor should launch an inquiry around Jan 10 and complete an initial investigation by Feb 17, shortly before Lee's inauguration on Feb 25. -- AFP
