KUALA LUMPUR: A 5-year-old girl died after she fell from a window of a 10th-floor unit of Menara Menjalara apartment in Kepong here yesterday.

The victim identified as Esha, who was staying with her mother, was left in the care of the mother's housemate since Friday.

She was, however, home alone yesterday when the mother's housemate -- a 25-year-old lorry driver -- left the Block A apartment for work.

Police investigations revealed that the 28-year-old mother, who said her job was selling medicines, claimed she went to Sentul to change some medicines she had obtained earlier.

Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner II Ku Chin Wah said the girl fell from the master bedroom window in the 5.15pm incident.

He said there were no signs of forced entry into the unit.

However, the window which had no grille was wide open when the police arrived. The curtain was torn and the screw of the railing was bolted.

Ku said a man in his 50s who was sitting at the lobby heard a loud noise and saw the girl lying on the ground.

"At the moment, we are classifying the case as a sudden death as investigations have shown there was no foul play.

"However, there are still doubts as there was not a spill of blood at the scene."

The police will wait for the post-mortem results today.

The body has been sent to the Kuala Lumpur mortuary.

A witness, who only wanted to be known as Chua, claimed he saw the girl was still alive when she hit the ground.

He said he alerted the apartment guards who called the police and ambulance.

The victim's mother arrived at the scene at 7.45pm after being informed by her landlord while her housemate came by at 8.15pm.

The mother and her housemate were taken to the police station for their statements to be recorded.
