KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: A medium who allegedly drugged and raped a businesswoman five times over a three-month period last year was detained by police on Friday for questioning.
The man, who was detained at his house in Jalan Klang Lama, was however released on police bail the next day.
City CID chief SAC 11, Ku Chin Wah, said police have taken his statement and investigations were on the way.
Ku advised those who face or have faced similar circumstances with mediums to come forward and make a police report.
Last October the victim, identified only as Lai, 32, approached the medium and his wife as she thought they could bring her good luck.
Lai had visited the couple at their house in Jalan Klang Lama between October and December.
She claimed, in a report lodged at city police headquarters a week ago, that she paid RM8,300 for prayers and was told to undergo "spiritual cleansing."
After several sessions the medium started to see Lai privately in his room.
She was told that her body was filled with evil spirits and had to strip from head to toe to clear it.
She claimed he told her that she would have to have sexual contact with him otherwise his good luck aura would not be passed on to her.
She also claimed that he told her that if she did not do so the evil spirit would not leave her body and made her drink 'holy water,' which was a concoction of burnt amulets and water.
After drinking, Lai felt sexually stimulated and lost consciousness.
Lai also sought help from MCA public services and complaint department head Datuk Michael Chong after lodging her police report.
Chong said that he received eight cases last year of people being cheated by crooked mediums.
The victims are mostly women. They lose their money and chastity to these crooked mediums who would threaten them if they did not fulfill the mediums' sexual desires.
Chong advised women not to be afraid to tell their husbands and lodge a police report if they should have similar experiences.
On the 18 cases of land scams in the country that Chong had submitted to the authorities,
Ku said police had set up a task force to look into the cases and hope to solve some of them soon.
