THIS cow hardly got a second glance in its village.
It used to be tethered in the open at night by its owner, a cattle farmer in Kulim, Kedah.
But last week, the cow became the centre of attraction in the village.
Some thieves got news that the cow was not penned in an enclosure at night.
Sensing an opportunity, the thieves hatched a plan.
They intended to strike while the village slept.
So in the early hours of last weekend they arrived to take the cow away, reported Kwong Wah Yit Poh.
The thieves could not lay their hands on a lorry to spirit away the animal so they hit upon a novel plan - shove the cow into the backseat of a car.
It all looked simple.
But they had not bargained for some villagers to be awake.
At about 4am, the thieves somehow managed to bundle the cow in the back seat of a Proton Wira. When the villagers spotted this, they raised the alarm.
They even managed to alert the local civil defence force.
With the villagers in hot pursuit, the thieves raced away with the cow. Along the way, the civil defence force joined in the chase.
At some point, the thieves lost control of the car and crashed into a tree.
They then fled the scene leaving a rather unamused cow in the wrecked car.
Police investigations showed that the car carried fake licence plates. Probably, the car was also stolen like the cow.
While the hunt for the thieves is on, the cow is back to its idyllic existence.
One thing is certain, the cow's owner will now take more care of it at night.
