THE former honorary consul of Senegal has been charged for his part in an underground casino run out of the consulate's office.
Sujono 'Benny' Kusni, 38, was in court last week, 18 months after the cover came off the illegal casino.
He is accused of allegedly letting the consulate office be used as a gambling den from October to November 2006 and pocketing about $69,000 for himself in the process.
The Indonesian also faces charges for immigration offences, such as allegedly giving false information on immigration cards.
He could be jailed for up to three years and fined up to $50,000, if found guilty of the gambling offence.
Honorary consuls are not entitled to diplomatic immunity under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
Kusni is the latest to be brought to court for offences related to the illegal gambling den, which was operating out of the consulate in Lau's Arcadia, East Coast Road.
At least 20 people have been sentenced to jail terms of up to six weeks and fines of up to $40,000.
The casino was reportedly set up by 10 people with a capital of about $500,000.
Kusni, who has lived in Singapore since young, is a permanent resident. The divorcee has two children, both of whom are citizens here.
He is now out on a bail of $40,000. The pre-trial conference will be held on May 13.
