KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: The Star's photographer, S. S. Kanesan, 43, never imagined he would be assisting in the capture of a person who had brutally stabbed a woman just hours earlier and left her to die in Kajang.
This is his first-hand account of how the man was captured:
"I was riding my motorcycle along Jalan Ipoh, heading to our office in Petaling Jaya, when suddenly I saw three men chasing another person towards the Perkim building car park opposite the MIC headquarters.
"I decided then to go around the back of the car park to try and cut off the exit of the suspected 'thief'. I saw that the three men had by then caught the 'thief' and were struggling to pin him down.
"He was well built and the men were having a hard time, so I rushed in to help them. Together we bound the suspect's hands with his own shirt.
"When we brought him back to his taxi I found out why the men had chased him.
"One of them explained that the taxi driver had rammed into a motorcyclist and did not bother to stop.
"As there was a traffic jam, the angry motorcyclist went to confront the driver. He then noticed a bloodstained bag and several credit cards strewn all over the rear passenger seat.
"The taxi driver panicked and ran. The motorcyclist and two passers-by gave chase.
"After being dragged back to the taxi, he was beaten up by the crowd and asked repeatedly by one of them how many people he had killed.
"He then shouted 'saya bunuh satu orang sahaja!' (I have only killed one person.)
"Ten minutes later, the police arrived and arrested the 'murderer'.
"I couldn't believe it when I was told that the person I had helped capture was the same man wanted in the stabbing case in Kajang.
"I never expected it to be the same man. I hope Lee (Hui Fun, the victim of the stabbing) will recover fully from her ordeal."
