KUALA TERENGGANU, MALAYSIA: A jilted lover attempted to murder his girlfriend by slitting her throat before trying to run her down with his car.

The man, a cop who had been suspended due to disciplinary problems, is believed to have attacked the victim, a Thai national, with a parang, while she slept in her house at Kampung Wakaf Tembesu at about 7.30am yesterday.

It is learnt the 23-year old victim had earlier told her boyfriend of a few years that she was seeing someone else.

The victim, who was bleeding profusely, managed to escape before the suspect could injure her further.

Her housemate, who heard the commotion, ran to her aid and took her to the main road in a desperate attempt to save her life.

The 27-year-old suspect who saw the two standing at the roadside, tried to ram into them but instead his car skidded.

He fractured his right leg in the accident.

Passers-by rushed the victim to hospital and she is in stable condition at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital intensive care unit.

OCPD Asst Comm Zami Shamsuddin said the suspect, who is based in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, was arrested in Tepoh yesterday and treated at the same hospital as the victim.

ACP Zami added the suspect was also believed to be a drug addict as police recovered drug apparatus at his home.
