Runner jailed and fined for accepting soccer bets

A MAN who collected soccer bets totalling about $160,000 on behalf of an unknown bookmaker was jailed for 14 months and fined a total of $160,000 on Thursday.

Tan Yeow Boon, 26, was also ordered to receive three strokes of the cane for splashing paint at the home of a debtor.

He admitted to four charges of acting as a runner by accepting bets to forecast soccer results for soccer fixtures on four days in May.

He earned a commission of 0.025 to 0.075 per cent commission from the bets collected.

He also pleaded guilty to assisting in carrying on a Toto lottery on May 26; and harassing Madam Tan Ah Hiang at her Jurong West Avenue 1 home on Jan 4.

He was taken to Traffic Court where he pleaded guilty to two charges - driving under disqualificaton and insurance coverage.

He was jailed for eight weeks and will be banned for four years upon his release from prison.

For the insurance offence, he was given a fine of $1,000.
