A CHINA overstayer who gave a $70 bribe to two cops to release her was jailed for three months on Wednesday.

Dai Feng Jie, 45, was given a four-week jail term and fined $2,000 for overstaying for 177 days after her social visit pass had expired.

The jail terms will run together.

A district court heard that Dai, who pleaded guilty, had met a friend for drinks at a coffeeshop in Geylang on June 4.

Her friend ended up getting drunk.

While they were walking along Race Course Road, her friend lay down to take a rest.

At about 4.15am, two police officers came to check their identities.

Dai insisted that her passport was with the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority for visa extension.

She tried to walk away several times but was told to cooperate.

Fearing arrest as she had overstayed since Dec 12 last year, she took out a stack of seven $10 notes and handed over to one of them. She then asked if she could leave and was arrested.

She could have been fined up to $100,000 and/or jailed for up to five years for corruption.

For overstaying, she could have been jailed for up to six months and fined up to $6,000.
