Wed, Jul 09, 2008
The Straits Times

AN UNEMPLOYED man was charged in a district court on Wednesday with extorting $100 from a stallholder.

Chong Yong Sen, 28, is said to have induced Mr Woo Poh Sing, 53, to hand over the amount by intentionally putting him in fear of harm and threatening to report him to the authority for selling dirty food at his food stall at Block 516 West Coast Road on Monday.

Bail of $10,000 was set. His passport was impounded.

If convicted, he faces a jail term of between two and seven years and caning.
