A MOTORIST who cut into the path of three motorcycles and caused the death of one of them was fined a total of $11,000 on Friday.

Administrative manager Lee Hong Yee, 32, was also banned from driving for 10 years.

He admitted to negligently causing the death of printer Yeoh Chee Wei, 27, while making a right turn from Mandai Road into Yishun Avenue 1 on May 10 last year.

He also admitted to causing grievous hurt to firefighter Mohamed Taib A. Hamid, 31, that morning.

The two motorcyclists, together with another rider, Ms Gangadevi Rounan, 21, also a Singapore Civil Defence Force officer, were on their way to work when the accident happened.

As Lee failed to keep a proper lookout while making the right turn at the cross-junction, he encroached into the path of the three riders. Mr Yeoh and Mr Taib were flung off their machines after colliding into his front left passenger door.

Ms Gangadevi managed to swerve to the right and slightly grazed the rear left of the car. Her body hit a traffic light pole.

Mr Yeoh was taken to hospital where he died on July 4 of broncho-pneumonia.

Lee could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for causing death through negligence.

For causing grievous hurt, he could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined up to $1,000.
