KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - THE Narcotics Crime Investigations Department (NCID) has busted an international drug trafficking syndicate and seized amphetamine-type stimulant (ATS) pills worth a whopping RM15 million (S$6.29 million).
Police also arrested 10 people, including three women, and seized RM190,000, US$14,000 (S$19,170), six cars, laptops, cameras, watches, credit cards and several counterfeit notes.
NCID director Commissioner Datuk Zul Hasnan Najib Baharudin said the success was made possible with the cooperation of the Taiwan police.
'The operation started early Wednesday morning when our officers, acting on a tip-off, monitored the movements and activities of several of the suspected syndicate members.
'Around noon, our officers moved in and arrested six people, including two women and a foreigner, who were unloading several boxes believed to contain drugs from a lorry into a restaurant in Sri Kembangan,' he said.
A search of the premises and the lorry found 23 out of 297 boxes containing almost one million ATS pills.
Comm Zul Hasnan said follow-up operations resulted in the arrest of four others in Cheras and Subang Jaya, where police also seized 195g of syabu.
'This is one of the biggest and most active syndicates known to be supplying ATS in the Klang Valley.
'We are still conducting follow-up operations and hope to make more arrests soon,' he said, adding that the 10 arrested were aged between 23 and 45. -- The Star
