KANGAR, MALAYSIA: The state Customs Department scooped up 45 slabs of ganja which were floating in the sea off Kuala Sungai Baru, near Kuala Perlis on Thursday.
State Customs director Mohd Isa Endot said the drugs might have been placed there by Thai smugglers for their accomplices to take it to its destination.
No arrests were made.
The ganja slabs, each weighing 1kg, were packed in two large plastic bags.
"It is believed that a local syndicate may have been waiting to collect the ganja," Mohd Isa said.
It is learnt the consignment was valued at RM112,500.
Acting on a tip-off, an 11-member state Customs Department team in two speedboats found the ganja after searching the coast for an hour.
It was at a spot five nautical miles from Kuala Sungai Baru, near Kuala Perlis.
Mohd Isa said this was the second time that ganja was recovered from the sea this year.
In May, Customs officers and police found ganja slabs in the water near Perlis.
In March, 2.75kg of opium was found in a mangrove swamp at the Kuala Perlis coast.
