THREE men caught with 18.43g of heroin escaped the death sentence on Friday after the prosecution allowed them to plead guilty to trafficking to a lesser amount.

Justice Woo Bih Lih reminded Singaporean Chia Teck Khoon, 40, and Malaysians Lim Chan Pung, 22, and Tai Keng Seng, 25, how fortunate they were.

He then sentenced them to lengthy jail terms with caning after they admitted for importing and possessing 30 packets of a powdery substance containing 'no less than 14.99g' of heroin.
