Jailed for newspapers theft

A CHINA construction worker who stole more than 500 copies of The Straits Times was fined $1,000 on Tuesday.

Dai Cheng Tao, 33, admitted to the theft of 547 copies of the daily worth $438 from newspaper vendor Meiyanathan Suriyamurthy, 49, at Joo Chiat Terrace at about midnight on Aug 8.

The court heard that he had filched the newspapers along Joo Chiat Terrace after the vendor had placed them there earlier to be distributed the next day.
