SEREMBAN: There has been an increase in the number of social crime cases in the state this year but the number of violent crimes has dropped. State police chief Datuk Osman Salleh said the overall crime index had not changed much, with the exception of the social crime and violent crime statistics.
He said the social crime cases which showed an increase were rape, blackmail and assaults.
"The blackmail cases are usually via telephone calls, letters and even husbands threatening their wives during domestics arguments," said Osman after launching the state-level Crime Prevention Month programme at Seremban Parade, here, yesterday.
Also present was Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation, Negri Sembilan chapter chairman, Datuk Goh Siow Huat.
Osman said besides social crime cases, there was an increase in the number of young people involved in drugs.
"Many tested positive during routine urine tests conducted by the police, therefore all agencies should join forces and double their efforts to curb this illegal activity.
"I also hope more non-governmental organisations and the public help the police in fighting crime."
However, Osman added he was disappointed that the public did not cooperate with the police's Rakan Cop programme.
He advised the public to be aware and alert of their surroundings and urged parents to ensure their children were not involved in crime.
