>BUKIT MERTAJAM, MALAYSIA - Three men, posing as Road Transport Department enforcement officers, escaped with RM1.3 million worth of microchips after they hijacked a security van transporting the consignment to a factory in Bayan Lepas. The men intercepted the van in front of a public swimming pool in Seberang Jaya on the pretext of conducting a spot check at 3pm on Friday.
The unsuspecting rookie driver, in his 20s, pulled over and alighted from the van.
Two of the men assaulted the driver before bundling him into the vehicle.
They then drove the van to a secluded spot in Taman Sutera Jaya, about a kilometre away, before unloading the microchips into another vehicle.
The driver, who sustained a cut on his head, managed to free himself and lodged a report at the Seberang Jaya police station.
Sources said a 50-year-old armed security guard who was supposed to escort the driver was not in the van when the robbery took place.
Seberang Prai Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Dr Mohd Shah Husin Shah said the driver and security guard had been detained to facilitate investigation.
There have been several robberies, cargo thefts and luxury vehicle hijacking cases involving bogus enforcement officers in other states over the past few years.
In the past, the notorious Mamak Gang was known for pulling off several cases of armed robbery and hijacking of vehicles by passing off as RTD officers and policemen
