GEORGE TOWN, MALAYSIA - Five men gang-raped an Indonesian maid after they used chloroform to overpower her in Bukit Dumbar here.

OCPD Azam Abd Hamid said the maid, in her early 20s, was walking along the road on Monday when she was bundled into a car and taken to an unknown place.

"When she woke up a few hours later, she found five masked men standing over her naked body. She was then told to dress up. One of them drove her back to the place where she was abducted.

"The victim subsequently made a report at the Jelutong police station. She was then sent to the Penang Hospital where an examination confirmed that she was raped," he said yesterday.

In another case, two men were arrested in connection with a RM250,000 goldsmith robbery in Campbell Street on Aug 13.

ACP Azam said the two were nabbed in Kuala Lumpur and handed over to the district police on Tuesday.

"We are still looking for their two accomplices who have been identified. The loot has yet to be recovered," he said.

In another incident, more than 20 people have been cheated by a woman of about RM100,000 in a low-cost housing scam in Balik Pulau district.

The woman, in her 30s, claimed to be the special assistant of an assemblyman and collected between RM5,000 and RM6,000 from each person as downpayment for the low-cost flat units in Sungai Nibong late last month.

The victims were earlier told that a few units had been put aside for them but they needed to come up with some downpayment.

They realised they had been cheated after finding out that the units had all been taken up.

Sources said police reports were lodged at the Bayan Lepas police station after repeated calls to the woman's handphone went unanswered.

The sources said the case was being investigated as cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

Police believe more people could have been cheated but have yet to lodge reports.
