Daylight robbery at airport
>GEORGE TOWN, MALAYSIA - In yet another robbery at an airport, two men armed with pistols robbed a goldsmith of six gold bars worth over RM800,000 ($332,240) here yesterday.

This time, however, the robbery occurred in the car park of Penang international airport in Bayan Lepas.

The goldsmith had gone to the airport to pick up an employee who had just arrived from Dubai, via Kuala Lumpur, with the gold bars.

As the men were walking to the goldsmith's Toyota Hilux at 10.30am, they were approached by two foreigners, believed to be Vietnamese.

The foreigners then whipped out their pistols and forced the goldsmith and his employee into the Toyota Hilux.

The robbers then grabbed two bags -- one containing the gold bars and the other, the employee's clothes and laptop computer -- and fled on foot.

State Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner II Wan Abdullah Tuanku Said said the goldsmith and his employee were too shaken by the incident to provide police with much details.

He said no shots were fired during the incident, adding that the robbers were not masked.

This is the second armed robbery at the airport in less than a month.

On Aug 26, a moneylender was shot thrice by robbers who mistakenly grabbed a bag of clothes instead of another bag containing RM1.9 million in cash.

That incident also involved two gunmen and they were wearing ski masks during the robbery. The moneylender survived the shooting. -- NST
