TAMPIN, Malaysia: A sundry shopkeeper was arrested on Thursday for allegedly raping his maid at his shophouse at Taman Perumahan Tampin Jaya, near here, several months ago.

The incident came to light after his maid ran away and lodged a report at the police station here.

The man, in his 20s, who is married with two children, lives in the shophouse with his mother, while the rest of his family stays at a house nearby.

The maid, also in her 20s, claimed that she was raped by her employer in a room on the first floor of the shop house.

"As soon as we received the report, officers from the crime unit arrested the man," said district police chief Superintendent Zull Aznam Harun.

"He is now in remand while the victim has been sent to the Tampin Hospital for a medical check-up."
