>JOHOR BARU, MALAYSIA - The family of Nurul Huda Abdul Gani had thought the person found guilty for her rape and murder had already been hanged. So it came as a shock to them when told the Federal Court had yesterday acquitted Mohd Abbas Danus Baksan of murdering the 10-year-old.
The girl's father, Abdul Gani Juni, was so distraught that he declined to speak to the New Straits Times.
However, it was clear that the family did not know that Abbas was still alive, judging from the reaction of Nurul Huda's 23-year-old brother Mohd Adib.
"Ingat dah gantung. Hidup lagi ke? (I thought he was already hanged. Is he still alive?)"
Speaking at the family's home in Kampung Pekajang in Gelang Patah, Adib said it was a sad day for the family. "The person who killed my sister should be punished accordingly."
Adib said the family seldom talked about the subject any more.
Other family members did not want to speak.
In Kuala Lumpur, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said police had done their best in the investigation into the rape-cum-murder of Nurul Huda.
"There is nothing more we could have done.
"We did everything and had given our best during the whole course of the investigation.
"What else can the police do if there are no willing witnesses to come forward to help in the case?"
Musa said police would not be reviewing the case.
