KUCHING, MALAYSIA: A woman died after she was set on fire by a relative.

Mordiah Hamden, 43, suffered 90 per cent burns when she was torched at her home in Jalan Merdeka on Friday.

The relative poured a bucket of benzene on Mordiah while she was watching television and set fire to her at about 9.30pm.

He then fled to his uncle's home before surrendering to the police at midnight.

Mordiah's aunt, Habibah Bujang, 50, said: "He came from the kitchen and poured the liquid on her, which I thought was water.

"He then lit a match and my niece was in flames.

"She ran to the bathroom and her brother, Salleh Hamden, put out the fire."

She died 15 minutes later.
