Marine policemen refuse RM30,000 bribe

SHAH ALAM (Malaysia): Marine police personnel were commended by the Selangor Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) for apprehending a 46-year-old suspect who attempted to bribe them on Tuesday.

Newly-appointed state ACA chief Moh Samsudin Yusof said the personnel involved were shining examples for all public servants.

"They acted professionally and did not hesitate to arrest the suspect before handing him over to the ACA."

The self-employed man attempted to bribe the policemen with RM30,000 to "settle" a case involving the seizure of handphones worth RM3.2 million that had been smuggled into the country.

Moh Samsudin said the suspect, who was from Pandamaran, Klang, was believed to be a runner for a smuggling syndicate.

A marine police patrol boat had intercepted a barge sailing towards the Lumut Straits.

The owner of the barge and two crew members, all Indonesians, were arrested after police discovered 13 suitcases filled with 12,800 Nokia and Titan handphones.

Later, a local man approached Assistant Superintendent Mohd Khairuddin Jamal at the Selangor marine police operations centre and placed a white envelope containing RM30,000 to get the goods released and to close the case.

He was immediately arrested and the ACA informed
