Investigated for accepting sexual favours
>Chief specialist and checkpoint inspector Chung Cheong Weng, 58, was charged in a district court Tuesday for allegedly accepting sexual favours from Chinese national Li Yanxiu in return for extending her special pass.

He is also charged with obstructing investigations by attempting to destroy evidence of their liaisons.

According to a statement by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), Chung job involves recommending to his superiors to extend the Special Passes of foreign witnesses, who are required to assist in investigations.

He was said to have met Li Yanxiu fives times at the Bright Star Hotel at Lorong 20 Geylang between December 2006 and April last year.

The 36-year-old Li Yanxiu had entered Singapore on a Social Pass, but was subsequently involved in a criminal investigation that required her to extend her stay on a Special Pass.

CPIB had begun investigations after receiving a tip-off that Chung was accepting bribes.

He allegedly leaked information about the investigations to Li Yanxiu, and instructed her to delete all SMS messages between them from her mobile phone.

Lianhe Wanbao reports that he has been working at CPIB for 30 years, and he has since been suspended from service.

Chung's wife posted his bail of $6,000 and he will appear in court again on Dec 29.

The maximum sentence for corruption is a $100,000 fine and a jail term of five years.

For hindering CPIB investigators, the maximum penalty is a $10,000 fine and a one-year jail term.
