MUAR, MALAYSIA: Foreigners flocking to their weekend rendezvous were checked by three units from the General Operations Force camp in Bakri here yesterday.

The units rounded up a few hundred foreigners and checked their work permits.

A unit member said the operation was aimed at finding those working without valid documents and to monitor their activities.

He said seven Indonesian workers were found to have no valid work documents and would be referred to the Immigration De- partment for further action.

There were complaints that the town was filled with foreigners during weekends so much so that local residents were wary to venture out.

Local residents praised the police for carrying out the checks.

Yaakob Ali said the presence of the units gave them a sense of security.

'We hope the checks will be on-going and that more policemen will be stationed in town during weekends,' he said.
