>KULAIJAYA, MALAYSIA - For the past year, a syndicate had been stealing cars from the Klang Valley and driving them 350 kilometres to a rented workshop to be cannibalised.
A team from the district police headquarters raided the workshop in Taman Kota Kulai on Tuesday and arrested three men and seized a Proton Wira believed to have been stolen.
In a follow-up operation, another seven, including a 24-year-old woman, were nabbed at a terrace house in Taman Gunung Pulai, Kulaijaya.
Police seized four other cars -- two Honda Civic, a Mitsubishi Evo 7 and another Proton Wira. The four cars were reported stolen in the Klang Valley last year.
Kulaijaya police chief Superintendent Zulkefly Yahya said the suspects, between the ages of 21 and 27, are believed to be members of the syndicate responsible for the thefts.
He said the syndicate's 27-year-old mastermind, who had a criminal record for possession of stolen items, was among those who were arrested.
Zulkefly said the synidicate members usually targeted cars with expensive audio systems.
Police had seized two amplifiers, an equaliser and an LCD monitor.
The items were valued between RM250,000 ($104,875) and RM300,000.
Other items included Allen keys, eight car keys, two mobile phones, a laptop, and tools used to break into cars.
The 10 suspects will be referred to police in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur for further investigations as all the cars were reported stolen in the Klang Valley.
