A baby was found abandoned in a plastic bag on the stair landing of a block of flats in Bukit Batok.

A cleaner found the body at about 5.30pm yesterday, at Block 334 on Bukit Batok Street 32.

The baby was left at the stair landing between the second and third floors of the flat inside a supermarket plastic bag.

The 28-year-old cleaner, Mr Shahjahan called his supervisor at about 5.30pm who then informed the police.

His supervisor, Mr Nasir Hossain, 33 said that he did not believe Mr Shahjahan at first but when he reached the block, "he saw the baby boy in the plastic bag, which was untied".

Police arrived at the scene minutes after receiving the report and cordoned the area for investigation. Paramedics announced the baby dead at 6.15pm.

There were no injuries or blood stains on the fair-skinned baby, which is reportedly about 20 cm in length.

Mohd Fahrul, 32, who lives on the third floor says that he saw the plastic bag when he left his home at about 4.30pm yesterday afternoon.

"I saw it from a distance but I thought it was just litter, so didn't pay much attention."

He only heard that the cleaner found the baby when he came home later that evening. Residents say that they did not notice any pregnant women at their block recently.

Police are investigating the case. The identity of the baby is still unknown and no arrests have been made.

Abandoning a baby carries a jail sentence of two years.
