KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - An ex-serviceman was arrested by police at the Sri Langkawi flats in Gombak Setia here on Monday for alleged rape.
Acting on a tip-off, police went to the flats at 1.50pm and found the front door locked. Despite knocking, no one opened the door, although noises could be heard inside.
Police then broke into the flat and spotted a man hiding behind a door. But when they tried to arrest him, he put up a struggle.
At this point, the man's mother came out of her room and began shouting and berating the police, saying her son was innocent.
During the commotion, the 27-year-old man suddenly grabbed a parang. But he was overpowered by the policemen before he could cause harm and was taken into custody.
Gombak police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rahim Abdullah said the suspect had been remanded for five days to facilitate investigations and that police were looking for another man.
"We believe there were two men involved in the rape case. The second suspect has been identified and we are tracking down his whereabouts."
On Sept 8, a woman clad only in a bra was spotted by a passer-by crossing a stream at the Alang Sedayu Recreation Park in Jalan Lama Gombak. Two men were seen pursuing the woman.
However, when the men spotted the passer-by, they fled from the place.
When interviewed by police, the woman said that she had been raped by both men at a nearby water treatment plant.
Investigations later revealed that the woman worked at an Internet cafe here and had a one-year-old son, who she had left alone in a hotel in Jalan Chow Kit.
As the woman did not have a permanent home, the baby was sent to the Welfare Department.
