GEORGE TOWN, MALAYSIA - An angry mob attacked a motorist and bashed him up after he crashed into three parked motorcycles along Jalan Tanjung Bungah, here.

Mechanic Eddy Quah Khoon Cheong, 24, suffered cuts and bruises on his face. He received more than 10 stitches for wounds on his head, ear and left eye at the Penang Hospital.

Quah said he was driving towards Batu Ferringhi to meet some friends and check out the night market about 11.30pm on Friday when the incident occurred.

"The car in front of me braked suddenly, and I slammed on my brakes and lost control of my Proton Saga," he said.

"My car swerved to the left and rammed into three motorcycles parked by the roadside."

A group of about 20 people, who were around, surged towards him, smashed the car window and dragged him out before assaulting him with helmets, rocks and sticks.

Quah said passing motorists also stopped to take advantage of the situation by stealing his gold chain and car stereo.

"One of them also pretended to be a policeman and demanded for my MyKad," Quah said from his hospital bed yesterday.

"He then tried to snatch my wallet when I took it out of my pocket. I was beaten up further when I refused to hand over my wallet and handphone.

"The mob also overturned my car. When a police patrol car arrived, I heard someone tell the police that the car had ended up that way upon impact."

His father, retired hawker Quah Kuan Keng, 59, lodged a report over the incident at the Patani Road police station here on Saturday evening.

Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakob said four people had since been detained for questioning after they turned themselves in at the police station on Saturday.
