GEORGE TOWN, MALAYSIA - Two men and a woman, all in their 20s, were arrested after one of them allegedly punched a traffic policeman in Farqhar Street here on Deepavali day.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Azam Abd Hamid said the three who included a public university student were initially flagged down by a team of traffic policemen at a road block at about 1am but they began hurling abusive words at the police.

"There was an argument and one of them suddenly punched the policeman on his face," he said at his office yesterday.

The policeman's uniform was also torn in the incident.

ACP Azam said the trio were charged under Section 324 and Section 332 of the Penal Code yesterday for voluntarily causing hurt and obstructing a public servant from performing his duty.

"They were also charged with driving under the influence of liquor under Section 45 (a) (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he added.

It is learnt that the three continued shouting when they were brought to the Petani Road police station, with one claiming his father was a doctor.
