MALAYSIA - A 19-year-old Indonesian maid in Kuala Lumpur was abused so severely by her employers and two teenage children that she is not able to speak loudly after sustaining frequent injuries to her throat, reported Kosmo!.

Sri Lestari Wigoyo said her injury was permanent after her abusers, including the children aged 15 and 16, kept hitting her around the throat.

"My family cannot even recognise my voice now," said the maid who started working three years ago.

She said the family had treated her well until after two months when she was punished for simple mistakes such as not ironing the clothes well and for making noises when washing the dishes.

Sri Lestari added that her ears were hurt with a stick, her hair was tugged, shoes were thrown at her and she was kicked against a wall.

After receiving complaints from neighbours, the police arrived at her employer's house and she was then taken to the hospital before being placed at a hostel.

A police report had been lodged over the matter.
