KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan -- A Pintung woman was arrested yesterday by Kaohsiung police for tricking 'otaku netizens' into transferring at least NT$2 million to her account by using false tales of woe to borrow money from users in an online chat room, local media reported.

The 26 year-old woman, surnamed Yu, who is 170cm tall and weighs 130kg, stole photos from pretty girls and used them as her profile picture in the chat room.

Yu told several lies to male netizens including that her mother was seriously ill, her brother died in a car accident and that she suffered from a severe disease, thereby she managed to borrow large sums of money from them for at least three years.

Yu, who used the pseudonyms Wen-wen, Hsiao-chuan and Shu-chuan in the chat room, took advantage of the netizens' compassion and even successfully charmed one netizen out of as much as NT$1.5 million.

Yu refused to meet with her netizen acquaintances and did not return any money.

The victim, surnamed Liao, whose photo was used by Yu in the chat room, said "I am happy with the consequences because I saw justice done."
