MIRI: A lovelorn man - jilted by the young woman he had been pursuing for two years - was arrested after he stalked, abducted and confined her in a futile attempt to win her heart.

This jobless man from Miri, in his early 30s, stalked the 21-year old woman all the way into Bekenu, a village 60kms south of Miri City.

He then forced her car off the road, pulled her out and dragged her into his car before driving her into the city and locking her in a room on top of a shop-block in a bid to win her love.

However, she managed to escape through a window and ran to the Miri Central Police Station to seek police help late on Sunday.

The police arrested the man at 11pm on Sunday and remanded him on Monday for abduction and forceful confinement.

Miri Police chief Asst Comm Jamaluddin Ibrahim confirmed the arrest on Monday.

''It wasn't kidnapping for money. The man was the woman's ex-boyfriend. I cannot reveal more. We (police) are still investigating,'' he said Monday.

According to initial statements to the police, the woman said she had known the man for two years and had told him recently that she was breaking off the relationship.

ACP Jamaluddin said the jilted man did not hurt the woman physically.
