KUANTAN, MALAYSIA: A seven month-old baby girl, bleeding in her brain and eyes, is fighting for her life in the intensive care unit of the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here.

Her 20-year-old father and 19-year-old mother have been arrested and police are seeking a seven-day remand.

Kuantan District Police Criminal Investigation Department deputy chief DSP Kamaruzzaman Jaafar said that a doctor, who also spotted old dark marks on her body, had alerted the police suspecting the parents of child abuse.

DSP Kamaruzzaman said the baby's parents from Bukit Setongkol, near here, had taken the girl to the hospital at 10am on Wednesday.

When the doctor asked the parents what had happened the parents claimed their baby had fallen.

"We believe the parents are trying to hide something," DSP Kamaruzzaman said.

He said the police arrested the parents to record their statements.
