Japan, TOTTORI--Police on Wednesday re-arrested a former bar hostess on suspicion of killing and robbing a truck driver whose body was found in the sea off Tottori Prefecture in April.
Miyuki Ueta, 36, of Tottori, has already been indicted over the murder and robbery of another man whose body was found in a Tottori river in October.
The Tottori prefectural police believe Ueta killed the truck driver, Kazumi Yabe, to avoid repaying debts she owed him.
According to investigative sources, Ueta is suspected of dosing Yabe, 47, with a sleep-inducing agent and drowning him in the Sea of Japan off Hokueicho, Tottori Prefecture, on April 4.
Ueta allegedly owed Yabe about 2 million yen.
Yabe's body was found in the sea on April 11. Components of a sleep-inducing agent found in his body matched those of one Ueta had in her possession.
Ueta's live-in partner, 46, who has been indicted on suspicion of fraud and other charges, reportedly told police that Ueta invited him on April 4 to a beach in Hokueicho, where she had been earlier in the day with Yabe.
When he arrived, Ueta reportedly said, "Yabe left after we had a fight."
A few days before the incident, Yabe reportedly demanded that Ueta repay him, but she asked him to wait a while.
Based on traffic records and other aspects of the investigation, the police confirmed that Yabe had been driving toward Hokueicho on April 4.
Ueta was rearrested in January for allegedly drowning Hideki Maruyama, 57, an electrician, in order to avoid repaying 1.23 million yen in electrical appliance expenses. Components of a sleep-inducing agent found in Maruyama's body also matched the one Ueta owned.
Based on the similarities in the cases and circumstantial evidence, the police believe that no one but Ueta could have committed the crime.
Yabe met Ueta around 2007, after she had claimed to be a former classmate of one of his acquaintances.
After she was arrested on suspicion of fraud in November, Ueta was rearrested and indicted in January for the alleged murder-robbery of Maruyama. She reportedly denied murdering Maruyama.
She also reportedly told her lawyers in November that she had never dosed Yabe with a drug.
