MALACCA - The teenager, whose body was found in the boot of a car, had told his cousin that his relationship problem had been "settled" after his former girlfriend accused him of rape.
The cousin, Wong Li Lian, 23, believes this could be the reason Yap Wai Seng, 18, was killed.
Wong, said she called Yap on Thursday evening after learning of his relationship problems from her father.
She said she wanted to check with Yap, who would occasionally confide in her, if he was doing fine following his recent break-up.
"I asked him to meet up for a drink at about 9pm to talk about his problems.
"We decided to meet on Friday as both of us had made other plans that day," she said when met at Yap's wake at a funeral house in Bukit Cina here yesterday.
She said Yap had been in the relationship for more than a month and had even taken his girlfriend to meet his grandparents in Taman Seri Krubong during Chinese New Year.
Yap's grandmother Lau Koon Chen, 60, said that he had recently broken up with his girlfriend.
"I noticed that he was sad and found out that his relationship with the girl had ended.
"I even called her up recently to try to see if I could patch things up between them, but she said no," she said.
Lau added that she was informed by Yap's friends that his ex-girlfriend's brother had wanted to meet him on Thursday night.
His friends advised him not to go but he assured them that everything would be fine, she said.
Yap's remains will be cremated at the Jeletong Chinese cemetery in Sungai Putat after his funeral at 2.30pm today.
Six suspects, including Yap's 18-year-old ex-girlfriend and her 22-year-old brother had been remanded for seven days on Friday.
Four male suspects, aged between 18 and 25, were arrested by a police patrol unit near a roadblock in Ayer Keroh at about 1.15am on Friday after Yap's battered body was found in a boot of the car driven by one of them.
Yap is believed to have been attacked near his ex-girlfriend's home in Semabok before his body was stuffed into the boot.
The initial post-mortem showed Yap suffered blunt trauma injuries to his head and other bodily injuries including being strangled.
The suspects being taken to the court for remand
Police recovered a short iron pipe, two crash helmets and a shoelace following investigations.
