52 stopped for suspected drink-driving, 10 arrested

52 people were stopped for suspected drink-driving in a four-and-a-half hour island-wide operation.

In the morning of February 23, 2012, road blocks were set up along Buangkok East Drive, Pasir Ris Drive 3, Whitley Rd, Woodlands Avenue 3, New Bridge Road, Church Street, South Bridge Road and North Canal Road.

Of the 52 motorists, nine male and one female motorists, aged between 23 and 48 years, failed the breathalyser test and were arrested on the spot for the offence of drink-driving.

The highest breathalyser test result clocked was 69 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, almost 2 times the prescribed legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

On conviction, drink-drivers will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months, and may lose their driving licenses which they can retake again.

First-time offenders can also be fined between $1,000 and $5,000, or jailed up to 6 months.

Repeat offenders may be punished with a maximum fine of $30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years.

They may also be caned up to six strokes should death or serious injury be caused.
