Malaysian man denies abusing adopted son, claims was 'discipline'

KLANG - A Rela personnel has pleaded not guilty in the magistrate's court here to a charge of abusing his seven-year-old adopted son.

Amminuddin Shaharudin, 43, as a person entrusted with the care of the child, is accused of hitting him on his hands and legs using a belt at No. 7, Jalan Gelama, Telok Gadong here at 7.50pm on July 1.

He is charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Children Act 2001 and faces a maximum RM20,000 fine or 10 years' jail or both upon conviction.

DPP Shahrul Ekhsan Hasim did not offer bail.

Lawyer S.K. Pari said that the boy was hyperactive and Amminuddin was merely trying to discipline him.

He urged the court to set bail at RM2,000, adding his client was ready observe any conditions imposed by the court.

The accused also told the court that he would be finding another place to stay if the court granted him bail.

Magistrate Maslina Mohamed then fixed bail at RM6,000 with one surety and warned Amminuddin not to go anywhere near the alleged victim.

The case is set for mention on Aug 22.
