Man dies in crash 5 hours before engagement

MACHANG, MALAYSIA: Siti Hazira Ahmad, 24, was to be engaged at 3pm yesterday.

But fate dealt her a blow when her fiance was killed in an accident about five hours before the ceremony.

Her boyfriend, Kamal Hisan Abdullah, died when his car skidded and rammed into a tree near Kem Desa Pahlawan in Kota Baru. The car split into two because of the impact.

The 33-year-old contractor was returning to his home in Kampung Pulai Chondong, here, after collecting some items for the engagement at Siti Hazira's house at Kampung Bukit Bidang, Pasir Putih, when the accident happened.

Kamal, who suffered serious head and body injuries, died on the spot in the 10.30am crash.

Siti Hazira said Kamal came over about 9.40am to take the engagement ring and his baju Melayu, among others, and left 20 minutes later.

"Before leaving the house, he told me to take care of myself which was quite odd since he had never said such things before.

"I tried to call him 30 minutes after he left but failed. I only understood his last words when a friend informed me about the accident.

"Only this morning, he told me that he was so excited and could not wait for our wedding."

Siti Hazira, a sales promoter, said she met Kamal, the second of four siblings, about five years ago and they had planned to tie the knot in July.

"We had planned a simple wedding as we wanted to save money for our future but all our dreams are now dashed. It is fated."

Meanwhile, Kamal's mother, Hasmah Seman, said her son left the house in a hurry to go to Siti Hazira's house.

Kamal Hisan Abdullah died on the spot.

Hasmah, 57, said she was preparing pulut kuning for the engagement when she was informed about the accident.

"He was an ambitious and hardworking boy."

District police chief Supt Shahurinaim Jais said the victim may have lost control of his car which skidded to the left side of the road and hit a tree.

Kamal's body was taken to Machang Hospital for a post-mortem.
