Grandmother and baby die in four-car pile-up

SEREMBAN, MALAYSIA: A five-month-old toddler and his grandmother were killed when the car they were travelling in was involved in a four-car pile-up at Km276 of the North-South Expressway on Friday.

M. Sanjev Raj was in the arms of M. Mariayee, 49, who was in the passenger seat of the Toyota Vios when the 11.30pm accident occurred.

They died on the way to hospital.

They were believed to have been seriously injured after hitting the dashboard. Mariayee was then flung out of the car while Sanjev fell to the floor in front of the seat.

It is understood that the Vios was hit from behind by a Toyota Camry and in turn rammed into the Honda CRV in front, which then hit a Proton Waja. The Vios then spun while the Camry burst into flames.

The toddler's parents, C. Maniraj, 35, and I. Radha, 30, escaped unhurt.

State traffic police chief ASP Abdul Halil Hamzah said the driver and passenger of the Camry had been admitted to a private hospital here for minor injuries.

Firemen from the Seremban 2 fire station were called to the scene to help extinguish the fire. The drivers and passengers of the two other cars were not hurt.

In another accident, a teenager was killed when he lost control of his car in Jalan Kuala Sawah about 8.30pm.

Wong Tze Hoe, 17, died on the spot after being thrown out of the car.

Halil urged witnesses to contact the Seremban traffic police headquarters at 06-6033222 or the nearest police station to help in the investigations.
