KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: The power base of the Chinese cannot afford to be split especially with the declining population of the community, MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said.

He said there should be a firm grip on the power base to ensure consolidated political power of the Chinese.

"The Chinese can't afford a split in political power by supporting the opposition which has not achieved anything.

"The opposition is a destructive force to the community. We cannot allow the strength of the community to be weakened.

"In fact we should further enhance our strength towards a consolidated political base to provide security to the community," he said.

Ong was speaking at the MCA's 59th anniversary with the theme "Heightening our resource to ensure success" at Wisma MCA here yesterday.

Ong said the MCA was still the guardian of the Chinese community in terms of politics, economics, culture and education since the party was formed in 1949.

A cake-cutting ceremony was also held to mark the anniversary.

Those present included deputy president Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy, vice-presidents Datuk Seri Dr Fong Chan Onn, Datuk Donald Lim and Datuk Ong Tee Keat, central committee members Datuk Fu Ah Kiow, Datuk Tan Chai Ho, Youth chief Datuk Liow Tiong Lai and Wanita chief Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen.

Ong said the Chinese, who had also contributed to the nation's achievement, had made significant progress in the past 59 years since MCA was formed.

He also paid tribute to party leaders who had passed away, retired or had paved the way for others to contest in the elections.
