'Malays need not fear over rights'

New Straits Times, ANN
>JOHOR BARU, MALAYSIA: Malays need not worry that their rights and position have been threatened by the losses suffered by Umno in the 12th general election, a seminar here was told.

Political scientist Dr Mohammad Agus Yusoff said "ketuanan Melayu" or Malay supremacy was protected as it is enshrined in the Constitution.

It is also protected by the Malay sultans.

Mohammad Agus of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia said the country would remain a Malay "polity" (system of government) where its rulers will be Malay.

Speaking to an audience of mostly Malay intellectuals, writers, entrepreneurs, non-governmental organisations and students, he said it was Umno that risked losing power.
Mohammad Agus was one of the main speakers at the Kongres Permuafakatan Melayu or Malay Solidarity Congress held at the Persada Convention Centre here yesterday.

Umno's losses in the March 8 elections have led party and community leaders to claim that Malay rights and their position in the country have been eroded.

Similar forums and seminars such as the congress have mushroomed all over the country ever since to discuss the perceived decline in Malay supremacy vis-a-vis Umno's electoral losses.
