'Toilet home couple' get new house
>TAMPIN, MALAYSIA - An elderly couple who were forced to turn an abandoned toilet at the Gemas railway station here into their home were yesterday given a new house under the Hardcore Poor Housing Project Scheme in Kampung Tengah, Gemenceh, near here. "No words can describe how we feel.

" My wife and I feel like a newly wedded couple," said Ismail Mat, 70, after receiving the keys to their new house from State Women and Family Development Committee chairman, Zainab Nasir, yesterday. Present was Ismail's wife, Rahimah Jolan, 68.

He said he was thankful that they now have a decent place to stay due to the timely intervention of Zainab, Tampin Member of Parliament Datuk Shahziman Mansor and the state Welfare Department.

"We are so happy and can finally spend our golden years in a comfortable environment."

The New Straits Times had earlier reported the plight of the couple who had turned the dilapidated toilet into their home since March 27 this year after Ismail was employed to upkeep the new toilets which were located near their "home".

They had used wooden planks and plastic to cover leaks and the toilet bowls.

The couple will also receive RM300 a month each, while NTV7 had also given them a RM2,000 cheque and foodstuff.

Zainab said the state was very sympathetic to the plight of the underprivileged and would assist them.
