A private investigator has alleged that Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak is linked to the murder of a young Mongolian woman.
Balasubramaniam Perumal claimed the police were negligent in their investigations, omitting certain facts, such as the alleged relationship between the deceased Ms Altantuya Shaariibuu and Datuk Seri Najib.
The allegation - a statutory declaration - was made public by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim at the headquarters of the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) yesterday, reported The Straits Times.
While UMNO leaders are refuting the claims, the opposition is calling for a thorough investigation and Malaysians across the country are reacting to the latest twist in an increasingly convoluted political saga of accusations, denials and counter-accusations.
What they are saying
"One after the other, we start filing so many statutory declarations. It will start to have no value."
-Opposition Parti Islam SeMalaysian deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa
"... ridiculous and preposterous. A statutory declaration is challengeable in court anyway. It is not something that is factual. I believe Malaysians at the end of the day will have common sense. Everybody must remain calm."
-Umno Youth secretary-general Abdul Rahman Dahlan
"Assuming the truth of the statutory declaration, it should be of great concern to every Malaysian that investigation procedures are handled poorly, with omission of important information, and that the police force has not seemed to act independently of political influence."
-Ms Tricia Yeoh, director of the independent Centre for Public Policy Studies

Netizens have their say too
"I was hoping for solid evidence that would bring a closure to the Altantuya murder case. Instead, I get another statutory declaration based on hearsay, a lot of hearsay."
-Prominent blogger Ahirudin Attan
"[Why was the sworn statement revealed] on a PKR platform and at this point of time when de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim is being accused of... what seems to be another sodomy charge."
-Blogger bigdogdotcom
"How come the SD (statutory declaration) came in so late and not when it is due? Is RPK spearheading the SD movement to prove to Subramaniam (Balasubramaniam Perumal) that everything is fine before the latter issues an SD?"
-seage on limkitsiang's blog
"...evidence was obtained and availed to certain people. All of it were not released for the apparent reason of wanting to corner certain quarters when they try to manipulate the SD and try to play it down or say no further action. It was scheduled to provide maximum damage and anyone who has love for Najib must advise the man to strike against Abdullah now. Otherwise, I'm sorry."
-no child play's on rockybru's blog
"All his accusations are based on hearsay... words of either Abdul Razak Baginda who is now locked up in SG Buloh... and Altantuya who is already dead... Both of them cannot confirm or deny any of those... What a disgusting and cheap trick..."
-Anis Ahmad Abdul Rahman on rockybru's blog
"Did he (Datuk Seri Najib) lie? First he said he hadn't met the victim of sodomy, then he said he met him at his house... On a SD by Saiful Bukhairy Azlan - where he claimed to have been sodomised by his boss, Anwar, and the latter denied the allegations, (Prime Minister) Abdullah Badawi said the accuser usually denies he was involved in a certain crime... That's exactly what Najib did."
-Blogger Susan Loone
"I don't know about you guys but I really can't keep up anymore with what's happening. With all these endless statutory declarations, police report after police report, statements hither and thither, I can't get any of it straight anymore. Who did what to whom? Who has been plotting to do what to whom? Who hates who, who loves who?"
