PASIR MAS, MALAYSIA: Pasir Mas MP Datuk Paduka Ibrahim Ali has proposed independent prosecutors be appointed if PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is charged with sodomy.
He said this would ensure impartiality and independence, as well as bring to an end the wrangling between Anwar, the police and the Federal Government.
Ibrahim, the sole independent parliamentarian, said the prosecutors should not come from the pool in the Attorney-General's Chambers or the Government's Legal Division.
Anwar, 61, is under police investigation after an ex-aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 23, alleged the former deputy prime minister had sodomised him.
Ibrahim said the law allowed for the appointment of special prosecutors with the recommendation of third parties.
Speaking during a ceramah (political address) in Lemal here on Sunday, Ibrahim said all effort must be taken to ensure that impartiality and professionalism were upheld in the quest to ascertain the truth behind the allegations.
Ibrahim said nobody should "prejudge" as the case was under investigation, but he hoped the authorities would expedite the process.
